Like a grim and gritty version of other books about magic with a kid for a main character, it just felt more… real… than things like the Harry Potter Ptolemy's Gate is the final third of the Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. Back in 2006, I picked up and read The Amulet of Samarkand and I really enjoyed it. Books in the Bartimaeus Trilogy: 1. The three books together make up 1500 pages of excellent storytelling. The Amulet of Samarkand (The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Book 1) · The Golem's Eye (The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Book 2) · Ptolemy's Gate (The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Book 3). I am a big fan of the trilogy (The Amulet of Samarkand, The Golem's Eye and Ptolemy's Gate) and count it amongst the best fantasy trilogies available so I will get the first question I asked myself out of the way early and quickly… The most important thing for me was that the relationship between Nathanial and Bartimaeus was able to build as it had in the book and that the humour, such a vital ingredient in the trilogies success, was successfully transferred across. Every once in a while, something you intend to do gets away from you. Read the Bartimaeus Trilogy, literally the best fantasy series. It's a great series, and I think there is a prequel called The Ring of Solomon.
